Director Tim Trachte is currently staging the big movie adventure of Germany’s most famous elephant Benjamin Blümchen (Benjamin the Elephant) at the MMC Studios in Cologne, Germany. Almost the entire feature film will be shot on MMC’s soundstages. On March 27, 2017, the film was presented to the press on the film set on soundstage 34.

With more than 14 million books sold, 160 gold and platinum awards, and more than 65 million audiobooks sold, Benjamin the Elephant is one of the most popular characters ever. Everybody knows his unmistakable “Toroo!” call. Now the big, strong, clumsy and warm-hearted elephant—who is celebrating his 40th birthday this year—gets his first movie adventure as a live action film for the whole family.

On March 20, the first clapper for Benjamin’s first feature film fell in the MMC Studios in Cologne, Germany.

31 of the 32 scheduled shooting days will take place on MMC’s soundstages 34 and 35. On behalf of MMC, the shooting will be supervised by Bastie Griese, Managing Director of MMC Movies, and Tobias Velmans, MMC’s Account Manager Studios.

Benjamin Blümchen is produced by Westside Filmproduktion in co-production with Rat Pack Film, Kiddinx and Studiocanal. The fast and funny family adventure directed by Tim Trachte and written by Bettina Börgerding will be released in theaters in 2018.

Benjamin and his best friend Otto (Manuel Santos Gelke) have to deal with the shrewd Zora Zack (Heike Makatsch) and they have to reach deep into their bag of tricks to save the Newtown Zoo.

Other stars include Friedrich von Thun, as the zoo director Mr. Tierlieb, Dieter Hallervorden, as ex-agent Walter Weiss, Uwe Ochsenknecht, as the corrupt mayor, Tim-Oliver Schultz, as Karl the Keeper, Liane Forestieri, as the reporter Karla Kolumna, Petra Nadolny, as cashier Mrs. Meier, as well as Max von Thun and Johannes Suhm, as Hinky and Pinky.

Benjamin Blümchen and the world around the Newtown Zoo are brought to life by the VFX specialists of Blanx Studios Cologne and Fish Blowing Bubbles.

The feature film is supported by the Film und Medienstiftung NRW (Film and Media Foundation NRW), the Film and Television Fund Bavaria (FFF), the Commissioner of the Federal Government for Culture and Media (BKM) and the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF).
