German Premiere of MMC Movies’ Co-production ‘Baghdad in My Shadow’ at the Hof International Film Festival

‘Baghdad in My Shadow’ which was co-produced by MMC Movies and partly filmed at MMC Studios will celebrate its German premiere this Friday at the at the 53rd Hof International Film Festival.

The movie will be screened as part of this year’s retrospective which is dedicated to multiple award-winning Iraqi-Swiss filmmaker SAMIR (Swiss Oscar entry ‘Iraqi Odyssey’, ‘Forget Baghdad’, ‘Always & Forever’).

His latest feature film tells the story of Taufiq, a failed writer, Amal, a wife in hiding, and Muhanad, a clandestine gay IT-specialist. They all meet at “Abu Nawas”, a cosy café and popular hangout for Iraqi exiles in London. Incited by a radical Islamist preacher, the writer’s nephew Nasseer turns against his uncle and a dramatic showdown takes place.

‘Baghdad in My Shadow’ shows how various ways of life, traditional and modern, atheist and Muslim, collide in a little cafe in the middle of London – an explosive mix staged with empathy and authenticity. Director Samir co-wrote the script for his new feature with Furat Al Jamil.

Amal is played by Zahraa Ghandour (TIFF entry ‘The Journey’). Other cast members include Kerry Fox (‘Intimacy’, ‘Bright Star’), Myriam Abbas (‘Homeland’), Ken Bones (Ridley Scott’s ‘Exodus – God and Kings’), Daniel Adegboyega (‘Transformers – The Last Knight’, ‘Gone’, ‘James Bond – Skyfall’), and Felix Scott (‘Inception’), with Haytham Abdulrazaq delivering a stunning performance as Taufiq.

On October 25, the premiere will be held at 9:00 p.m. at the Central Theater in Hof. An additional screening is scheduled for October 26 at 1:30 p.m. at the City Theater.

Production Notes: More than half of the film was shot in Cologne.
