The majority of German TV shows are produced at the MMC Studios, and additionally, national and international film productions, as well as series and daily soaps. Moreover, the studios in Cologne are a popular location for company events and trade shows. They are also a venue for eSport events, where international gaming stars compete in enthralling tournaments and league games. The MMC also provides the ideal production environment for live entertainment, whether for rock, pop, jazz, musical or classical music events.
For today’s and tomorrow’s YouTube stars, MMC has arranged a dedicated Creative Space, including a studio, a green box, and several sets. Here, fresh web video shows are produced.
There are 19 studios and soundstages available for TV, film, and event productions. Sizes range from 1,900 to 28,000 ft2, including the world’s tallest soundstages with a height of 85 ft. each.
All TV studios are connected to the MMC Post-Production facilities via glass fiber, which are providing extensive capacities for editing, color grading, and audio post-production and realizing the latest tapeless workflows, including frame chase editing.
The office spaces, with more than 300,000 ft2, are in close proximity to the studios, enabling effective working over short distances.
With the 985 ft. long Coloneum Mall with its total floor area of 64,600 ft2, MMC provides Europe’s largest daylight studio and, along with it, an “all-around carefree package” for film and TV productions, which, while shooting there, benefit from outdoor light conditions combined with the predictable conditions of a TV studio. The Coloneum Mall is also particularly popular for action-packed game shows, as entire game courses can be effectively staged here, regardless of weather conditions. Moreover, it is also a sought-after location for trade shows and events.
MMC’s Art Department, with its own workshops on the studio lot, and equipped with state-of-the-art production technologies for sets and sceneries, can produce and install projects of any dimensions in a very short time. Props and sceneries can be safely and temporarily stored at MMC’s storage facilities with a total area of 130,000 ft2.
The spacious outdoor area of the MMC Studios offers diverse possibilities for outdoor shooting of films, series, or daily soaps. The backlot for the daily soap “Alles was zählt“ (=All That Matters), playing in the city of Essen, is located on MMC’s studio lot. It includes residential buildings, a gym, a bar and a snack bar—just as does the legendary “Schillerallee“, which is the backlot for the daily soap “Unter uns” (=Among Us).
International scenes of action, car journeys, shooting on skyscrapers or ships, in airplanes, as well as airports, industrial plants or high-security facilities—such outdoor shooting requires significant effort or cannot be realized by producers. For these challenges, MMC provides an efficient solution in cooperation with Stargate Studios, which is located on the studio lot: The virtual backlot technology enables the shooting of scenes that take place in New York, Washington DC, Moscow or Cape Town, in MMC’s daylight studio (Video).
More than 300,000 clips from more than 3,000 locations in the most important cities and regions around the globe can be included as a 360-degree virtual environment that can be seamlessly melded with actions shots and other camera work. This procedure, used by Stargate Studios for numerous US series, is surely one of the best and most cost-effective alternatives to classical outdoor shooting.
The MMC Studios in Cologne therefore offer much more than just enough space for all kinds of projects. In addition, the company provides state-of-the-art technology, combined with creativity, know-how and the many years of experience of the MMC staff. All these factors, combined with a sense for emerging trends and customer’s desires, ensure MMC’s successful realization of projects.
