Marco Bellocchio’s latest film “The Traitor” (Il Traditore) which was partly shot at MMC Studios will premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival on May 23.
The biopic starring Pierfrancesco Favino tells the story of Tommaso “Don Masino” Buscetta, the first high-ranking Mafia boss to turn informer on the Cosa Nostra. Buscetta’s testimony led to the first big trial against organized crime and the conviction of hundreds of Mafia members in Italy and the US.
The movie, which has been described by the 79-year-old director as “neither shrine to Buscetta nor condemnation”, will also hit Italian theaters on May 23, 2019.
Bellochio wrote the screenplay together with Ludovica Rampoldi, Valia Santella, Francesco Piccolo and Francesco La Licata.
“The Traitor” was shot on MMC’s soundstage 51 and in the city of Cologne, among other places.
The film is a production of Cologne-based Match Factory Productions and was backed with 400,000 Euros by Film- und Medienstiftung NRW (Film and Media Foundation NRW). The executive producers are Kavac (I) und IBC Movie (I), together with producers Ad Vitam Production (F), Gullane Entretenimento (BRA), in association with the broadcasters ZDF and Arte.
Pandora will release the film theatrically in Germany, with world sales being handled by The Match Factory.
