After Peter Ott’s thriller “Das Milan-Protokoll” (The Milan Protocol) that was shot at the MMC Studios and on location in Dohuk, Northern Iraq, has already caused quite a stir at several national and international festivals, RealFiction will release the movie about a kidnapped doctor and weapons deals in the Middle East in German theaters on January 18, 2018.
“The Milan Protocol” tells the story of the German doctor Martina, who works for an aid organization in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, on the border to the “Islamic State”. On her way to a wounded fighter, Martina gets kidnapped by a Sunnite clan loyal to ISIS.
While Martina is suffering from being captive, different players in the region try to take advantage of the German hostage. Besides the German Federal Intelligence Service “BND”, also the Turkish and Kurdish secret services want to be part of “the game”. Not knowing who to trust, Martina starts losing her ability to distinguish between reality and imagination.
The leading roles are played by Catrin Striebeck (Martina), Christoph Bach (Moses) and Samy Abdel Fattah (Ismael). The film is directed by Peter Ott, who also wrote the screenplay. Cinematographer Jürgen Jürges, who has worked with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Wim Wenders, Andreas Kleinert and Michael Haneke, filmed the parts of the movie that were shot in Germany, while Jörg Gruber filmed the scenes that were shot in Iraq. The production design of “The Milan Protocol” is by Silke Fischer and Jalal Saedpanah.
“Das Milan-Protokoll” is a production of mîtosfilm (Mehmet Aktas) in co-production with WDR (Andrea Hanke), HR/ARTE (Jörg Himstedt / Birgit Kämper ) and MMC Movies Köln (Bastie Griese / Philip Borbély). The movie is backed by Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, Filmfoerderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein and the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF).
“The Milan Protocol” was shot on location in Iraqi Kurdistan and at the MMC Studios in Cologne, Germany. Here, the interiors of the German consulate in Erbil were built by MMC’s art department on soundstage 42. On this set, the interrogation of Martina by the BND takes place. In addition, the hideout of the kidnappers was constructed on MMC’s soundstage 34. In this house, the scenes with the imprisoned doctor were shot.
