The nominations were announced on Thursday evening at the 55th Solothurn Film Festival in Switzerland.
Samir’s ‘Baghdad in My Shadow’ that was partly filmed at MMC Studios received three nominations: Best Feature Film, Best Script (Samir), and Best Editing (Jann Anderegg).
The awards will be presented in Zurich on March 27. We keep fingers crossed!
At the Solothurn Film Festival, the thriller is nominated for the Audience Award and will be screened at the Solothurn concert hall on January 27th at 8:30 p.m.
Samir’s latest feature film tells the story of Taufiq, a failed writer, Amal, a wife in hiding, and Muhanad, a clandestine gay IT-specialist. They all meet at “Abu Nawas”, a cosy café and popular hangout for Iraqi exiles in London. Incited by a radical Islamist preacher, the writer’s nephew Nasseer turns against his uncle and a dramatic showdown takes place.
Production Notes: More than half of the film was shot in Cologne.
8 of the 17 scheduled shooting days in Cologne took place at MMC Studios. The entire Café Abu Nawas was built by MMC’s art department on soundstage 50. Here, the interior shots of the café were filmed.
The exteriors were filmed four months later in London, in December 2017 (7 days). Further filming locations were Zurich (5 days) and Baghdad (3 days).
‘Baghdad in My Shadow’ is a co-production of Dschoint Ventschr Filmproduktion, COIN FILM, Ipso Facto Productions and SRF, Teleclub and MMC Movies.
The film is supported by Media, BAK Bundesamt für Kultur, Zurich Film Foundation, Suissimage, Focal Stagepool, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW (Film and Media Foundation North Rhine-Westphalia), DFFF – German Federal Film Fund, and the BFI British Film Institute Tax Credit.
