Press release: MMC Studios: 60 % growth in show productions

Cologne, March 5, 2019: 320 TV shows, 530 series episodes and six feature films: in 2018, MMC Studios was booked as never before.

Above all, TV shows such as "Let's Dance," "Die Höhle der Löwen" and "Genial daneben" were produced over several weeks in the Cologne studios. MMC Studios were also frequently in action outside the Coloneum - for example in South Africa.

"In 2018, the demand for studio capacity has once again increased significantly," says Philip Borbély, Managing Director of MMC Studios in Cologne. "This was due, among other things, to comedy formats such as 'Genial daneben - Das Quiz' or 'Mord mit Ansage.' With these shows, the recordings often lasted several weeks."

In total, in the year 2018 around 320 show productions were produced at MMC Studios. By comparison, 190 shows were created at the Cologne film and TV studios in 2017. "Almost the entire Sat.1 Funfriday was recorded here," adds Nico Roden, Director Sales & Production. Also formats such as "Promi Big Brother" (Sat.1), "Da kommst Du nie drauf!" (ZDF), "X Factor" (Sky) and "Masters of Dance" (ProSieben) were produced in the Cologne studios. Major live shows were also a permanent part of the program in 2018: Last year, for example, a total of 37 live shows were broadcast from the Coloneum. Successful formats such as "Deutschland sucht den Superstar" (RTL) and "Das Supertalent" (RTL) were available in ultra-high definition (UHD) for the first time in 2018.

However, the 20 studios on the Cologne site were not only used for TV productions: Six motion pictures were partly made at MMC Studios last year. Director Yuval Adler's team visited the studios for the international spy thriller "The Agent" starring Diane Kruger and Martin Freeman. There was an unusual set for the musical film "I've Never Been to New York": Here, the "Art Department," the set construction department of MMC Studios, built a giant cruise ship in the 2,000-square-meter, 26-meter-high Studio 53. In addition to German productions such as "Gut gegen Nordwind" with Nora Tschirner and "Deutschstunde" (based on the novel by Siegfried Lenz), the documentary "Cunningham 3D" and the Mafia drama "Der Verräter" were also produced in Cologne.

2018 was also the anniversary year for the MMC Studios-based Success seriesOn August 15, RTL aired the 3,000th episode of "Alles was zählt" (AWZ). The early evening series has been filmed in Cologne since 2006. The classic daily soap "Unter Uns" celebrated exactly twice as many episodes in November. Schillerallee" has been a fixture at the Ossendorf studios for 19 years. The hit series "Alarm for Cobra 11" also celebrated several anniversaries: 33 seasons, 22 years and 11 new episodes - some of them recorded at MMC Studios. Highlights also included the ZDF Bauhaus series "Die neue Zeit," which was a guest at the Cologne studios for 10 weeks in 2018.

The approximately 160,000-square-foot studio site is also used each year for numerous Events used: In 2018, among other things, the "Screenforce Days" took place at the MMC Studios. Here, more than 40 broadcasters discussed the TV trends of the future. The studios are also regularly booked for corporate events, such as this year's anniversary celebration of FC Cologne.

Also outside MMC Studios has the Art Department In 2018, MMC built numerous "backdrops", e.g. for the digital marketing trade fair DMEXCO. For this, MMC created all stages of the event, the Start-up Village as well as the exhibition stand of the city of Cologne. Also the sets of the "German TV Award", the "Celebrity Darts World Cup" or the TV show "Ninja Warrior" were designed and/or built by MMC scenery construction. For the TV show "Get the F*ck out of my House," the MMC team installed almost 50 cameras in a single-family house where 100 people moved in for up to four weeks. MMC Studios were also often on the road with DSDS: For the casting tour, a wide variety of locations throughout Germany were transformed into studios, and for the recall, they even went as far as South Africa.

According to Borbély, things are set to continue just as successfully in 2019: "This year, we have even expanded our range of services," says the MMC managing director. "In our new Color Grading Suite colorists can make color corrections on a ten-meter-wide screen using the latest grading systems and projection technology. The suite is one of the largest and most modern in the world. The studio is already booked for some exciting film but also increasingly commercial projects in 2019."
