On March 07 and 08, at 8:15 p.m. each day, DAS ERSTE will be showing the two-part feature film "Gladbeck about a unique serious crime that shook the Federal Republic in 1988 and still represents a national trauma. The two-part film was produced by the MMC Movies Cologne GmbH co-financed and some shots for the film were also taken in the MMC Studios.

Gladbeck, August 16, 1988: A failed bank robbery develops into a three-day hostage situation. While the perpetrators become media stars in the process, German journalism loses its innocence - and three people end up losing their lives. The two-part series "Gladbeck" depicts a crime that has burned itself into the collective memory and explores the question of what mechanisms must be at work for people to lose their sense of moral integrity, law and order.

About the content:
On August 16, 1988, two masked men attack a bank branch in Gladbeck, North Rhine-Westphalia, and take two bank employees hostage. It quickly becomes clear to the investigators led by head of operations Meise that the two criminals are Hans-Jürgen Rösner and Dieter Degowski. Both have a penchant for brutality, a hatred of police officers and a greed for attention.

Although they receive the money they demand, they flee unhindered across Germany with their two hostages. An army of journalists is always there live via television and radio - a crime in real time.

While the hostages' lives are in danger, the bank robbers are interviewed in front of running cameras, talk to passers-by and go shopping, while the police's jurisdiction and legislation keep changing depending on the federal state, leaving one access opportunity after another unused.

For 54 hours, the crime keeps the republic in suspense. Three people are killed.
